Smoque Steak Chicago

Strategizing for the future, S+R worked hand in hand with the owners of Chicago local sensation Smoque BBQ to find and develop the perfect space for their next restaurant venture. After going through many years of iterations of restaurant concepts, the idea for reimagining a classic Chicago Steakhouse that was approachable, modernized, and infused with Smoque’s personal vibe needed a home. After working together through space test fits and walkthroughs, the space that would eventually become Smoque Steak Chicago found its home in a 7000 sq.ft. historical bowstring truss building in the Avondale neighborhood of Chicago.

Transforming a raw industrial space into a welcoming neighborhood restaurant involved many challenges including an ongoing global pandemic, rapidly fluctuating construction and material costs, and evolving client needs over years of redevelopment. Pushing past every challenge, the final space plan makes use of the existing bowstring trusses to divide the vast dining room into four dynamic sections that can be opened or closed with the use of sheer curtains pocketed into custom metal screen dividers. Custom fabricated metal screens throughout help divide out additional functions as well as provide extra storage for the entry wine bar and service bar towards the rear of the dining room. Using a sea of mixed white pendants above the dining space, the ceiling plane is pulled down to create an intimate and comfortable dining environment. Materials throughout were inspired by a mix of classic steakhouse and barbeque tropes through the use of natural wood grain, smokey tones, and industrial metals all next to a good old chambray napkin. The combination of strategies, materials, and furniture choices pushed the boundaries of the conceptual design beyond what was thought imaginable.
